Hörnlihütte Zermatt
Overview
Intro
The Hörnli Hut is an historic mountaineering site situated at the foot of the Matterhorn. This is where guests from all over the world spend the night before they climb the Matterhorn via the Hörnli ridge, the Zmutt ridge or through the north wall.
After the Matterhorn was first conquered in 1865, more and more people came to explore this exceptional peak which could now be climbed. The Hörnli Hut was first built in 1880 at an elevation of 3260 metres and accommodated seventeen guests. Since then, the hut of the Swiss Alpine Club (SAC) has served many mountaineers as the starting point on the way to the top of the Matterhorn and it also provided shelter when the weather turned bad. The Hörnli Hut was renovated between 2013 and 2015 and rebuilt according to the plans of architects Arnold, Perren & Zurniwen of Zermatt. Just in time for the 150-year anniversary of the first ascent of the Matterhorn, the hut reopened in July 2015. It now meets the latest requirements for environmental compatibility, safety, hygiene and function.
