Overview
Intro
A gentle ascent leads along the river through the idyllic Val Roseg, where massive boulders lie among flowers and conifers. The trail then climbs steeply over pastures with views of the surrounding peaks and the glaciers of Sella and Roseg. At Fuorcla Surlej, you cross a gravel landscape.
Description
Pontresina enjoys a sunny and sheltered location on a hillside terrace. The spa town, surrounded by fragrant fir and larch forests, lies in the highest side valley of the Upper Engadine. Crossing the Punt Ota, you leave the village with its stylish old Engadine houses in a southerly direction, and after a few metres, you are at the entrance to the Val Roseg.
The Ricola show garden is located here. You can learn a great deal about the 13 herbs in the original recipe and even touch and smell them. Following the Ova da Roseg upstream, you soon cross the tracks of the Rhaetian Railway. A wide path leads along the wild river through the narrow valley. Numerous massive boulders lie scattered between stone pines, larches and flower meadows. Together with the sound of the river, a marvellous natural idyll accompanies the gentle ascent.
Shortly before you reach the Hotel Roseg, the valley opens up and turns into a broad alluvial plain. The trail now branches off to the right, and the steep ascent over pastures to Fuorcla Surlej begins. During the climb, the views of the peaks of Piz Tschierva, Biancograt, Piz Roseg and Piz Glüschaint and the Sella and Roseg glaciers are breathtaking.
Soon the tree line is crossed, with around 700 metres to climb on stony paths. You reach the highest point of the hike at 2,754 metres. The beautiful Fuorcla Surlej mountain hut, with its small lake reflecting the mountain peaks and the rocky surroundings, invites you to take a break. The views can be enjoyed to the full.
Next up is an easy descent, followed by another ascent through a gravel landscape with fantastic views of the Upper Engadine lake scenery and the three-thousand-metre peaks above St. Moritz. The stage's endpoint is reached at the Murtèl mid-station. From here, you can also take the cable car back down into the valley to Silvaplana Surlej.
