Intro

The appearance of the breasts is very important for most women, and many are dissatisfied with the shape or size. Breasts frequently change over one’s life due to gravity or pregnancy. Alongside breast reduction and breast lifting, breast augmentation is the most common plastic surgery affecting the breasts. Breast reconstruction is a matter close to the heart of patients with breast cancer who have had part or all of their breast removed. Self-esteem depends largely on satisfaction with one’s own body.

Breast augmentation
Breast augmentation is carefully planned before the operation. The size and shape of the implant are chosen according to the patient’s wishes and to suit her body. The breast implant is placed either under or over the pectoral muscle. The plastic surgeon makes the incision below the breast, near the areola or in the armpit. This means he can hide the subsequent scar in places that are barely visible. A special bra must be worn for around six weeks after the operation until the wounds have healed completely.

Breast reduction

In breast reduction, the shape is often adjusted or differences in the size of the breasts rebalanced. Excess skin is taken away and fat and glandular tissue are removed. A breast lift can be performed on its own or together with an augmentation or reduction of the breast. The incisions are made in such a way that the scars are barely noticeable afterwards. They are usually around the areola or in the area below the breast. In order for the patient to be satisfied with the result, the plastic surgeon must discuss her expectations in detail beforehand. The results of breast surgery really become visible after around half a year.

Breast reconstruction

Breast cancer is an enormous trauma. The necessary treatment may involve the loss of one or both breasts. Breast reconstruction is of great importance for psychological well-being and personal identity. It is for this reason that breast reconstruction is usually planned at the same time as cancer treatment. Generally speaking, there are two methods available: techniques that involve the use of implants, and reconstructions with your own tissue.
