Discover the Säntis
From Schwägalp, the
aerial cableway takes you to the Säntis summit in just ten minutes. It’s almost a pity you can’t enjoy the panorama windows for longer. With a bit of luck, you might spot ibex or red deer along the way. At the 2,502-metre summit, a unique 360° view awaits you, stretching as far as
Lake Constance and across to neighbouring countries France, Germany, Italy, Austria and Liechtenstein.
Schwägalp and Säntis World of Experience
Schwägalp, at the foot of the Säntis, is considered a special place of energy. In the nature discovery park, you can explore the interplay between forest, moor and alpine farming. The geology stone park explains how the Säntis was formed, while in the show dairy you can follow the path from alpine pasture to a wheel of cheese. How extreme the weather on the Säntis can be, and why glacial ice is blue, are revealed in the adventure world next to the Säntis cableway.
Hiking around the Säntis
In summer, the Säntis offers trails of varying difficulty: from a panorama trail around the summit station to demanding alpine hikes. In winter, you can enjoy a romantic walk along the
Laternliweg Schwägalp. One of the most popular tours leads from Schwägalp via Tierwis to the Säntis – through spectacular rocky landscapes and across the “Himmelsleiter,” a secured rock staircase just before the summit. Along the varied routes, mountain huts invite you to stop for refreshments. For most hikes, good footwear, weather protection, surefootedness and a head for heights are essential.
Around the Säntis
Among the most beautiful tours in the Alpstein is the ridge hike from the Säntis to the
Ebenalp – or the other way round. Discover the picturesque
Appenzellerland and experience traditional crafts in
Appenzell. Not far away is the holiday region
Toggenburg with the
Churfirsten. Other worthwhile excursion destinations include
St. Gallen with its
Abbey District and
Lake Constance.
