Intro

The combination of intensively used meadows, upland and lowland moors provides the habitat for vast numbers of species of plants and animals.

Up on the Alp Flix, above Sur, they were counted in the year 2000: on a "Species Diversity Day" around the Alp Flix, researchers counted 2092 different species. They also discovered a previously unknown species of dung fly, which now bears the name of the Alp Flix: "Rhexoza flixella".

Cleared and utilised by the Walser people in the 16th century and still a place of residence today, a large meadow was created here which is again inhabited and farmed all year round. The Alp Flix is a protected moorland landscape of national significance. Ice Age glaciers once carved out the wide plain here and created a gradual relief landscape of crests and hollows. Raised bogs and fens developed where the groundwater and stream water gathered.

There is also a research trail for children on the Alp Flix. The researcher kit includes a magnifying cup, spider catcher and lots more. It is available from the region’s tourist offices and hotels.
