Intro

In and around the former monastery complex, nature flourishes in its purest form — something cherished by both our guests and the local wildlife.

In the Ittinger Forest, around our ponds, and within the old walls, a variety of birds (such as kestrels), amphibians, and reptiles have found a home. Occasionally, even a squirrel makes an appearance. And when night falls, bats emerge from the crevices of the historic walls; our property is an official bat habitat for at least five different species. Guests, however, remain blissfully unaware of their presence — a fact the bats greatly appreciate as well.
The Kartause Ittingen has been recognized by the Bat Conservation Association of Thurgau with a plaque as a bat habitat of national significance.
The bees in our beekeeping house feast on the blossoms from our gardens and orchards. A regional beekeeper lovingly cares for these diligent little workers. For wild bees, we craft bee hotels in our own carpentry workshop together with our supported employees, using our own wood and reeds. Both the bee hotels and our honey are available for purchase in our monastery shop, alongside some 200 other homemade products.
Hedgehogs, too, find countless shelters — from purposefully placed brush piles to stacks of wood. Through our natural approach to land management, we actively promote biodiversity in many ways.
