A natural rock arena formed by glaciers and erosion: The Creux du Van natural rock amphitheatre is 1.4 kilometres wide and 200 metres deep. The protected nature reserve is home to ibex, chamois, lynxes and alpine plant species. The monumental rock face is one of the most impressive natural formations in Switzerland and attracts visitors from all over the world.
What to experience
Viewpoint at the Restaurant du Soliat
You can reach the Restaurant du Soliat by car or bus. From there you can reach the Creux du Van natural rock amphitheatre in a few minutes. Your view extends over the Jura Arc, the Swiss Plateau to the Alps – on a clear day as far as Mont Blanc and the Eiger. Early in the morning and late afternoon, you may be lucky enough to spot ibex and chamois on the edge of the rock.
- Good to know: Parking is limited, use public transport if possible.
- Tip: The ideal season is spring to autumn – in winter, many paths are not accessible.
Circular hike from Noiraigue (4-5 hours)
Start in the village of Noiraigue and ascend via the "Sentier des 14 Contours". The 14-kilometre route with 14 curves takes you 600 metres up to the Creux du Van natural rock amphitheatre. Once at the top, you stand on the edge and look into the 200-meter-deep rock basin. An absolute highlight for hiking fans.
- Good to know: The climb is steep; good physical condition and sturdy shoes are required.
- Tip: In the morning, there are fewer people on the road and the light is perfect for photos.
Lower Plateau Discovery Trail (30-40 minutes)
Start at the car park at the foot of the Creux du Van natural rock amphitheatre and follow a short nature trail through forests and meadows. On this easy walk you will discover the unique Jura flora, geological layers of the rocks and viewpoints – ideal for families and all those who want to experience the Creux du Van natural rock amphitheatre without much climbing.
- Good to know: The nature trail is partly uneven, good shoes are recommended.
- Tip: Take binoculars with you and discover rock cirques, animals and plants up close.
