Grossmünster – Church
Overview
Intro
The Grossmünster is Zurich's landmark. You will visit the Romanesque church, climb the Karlsturm and discover the medieval stained glass windows – right in the heart of the old town, between Limmat and Niederdorf.
The Grossmünster at a glance
The Romanesque double-towered church has shaped the silhouette of Zurich since the 12th century. The Grossmünster was a centre of the Zurich Reformation under Huldrych Zwingli. Worth seeing are the modern stained glass windows by Augusto Giacometti in the choir and the crypt with a figure of Charles from the Middle Ages. The Karlsturm can be climbed for a fee.
What to experience
Church tour
Inside the Grossmünster, your eye immediately falls on the coloured choir windows by Augusto Giacometti from 1932. The crypt houses a Romanesque statue of Charlemagne. Discover where the Reformation began – the Grossmünster is considered one of the most important Protestant churches in Switzerland.
- Good to know: In 2026–2027, the Grossmünster will be renovated – areas with limited access.
- Tip: Admission to the interior of the church is free of charge.
Ascent to the Karlsturm
From the Karlsturm you have a wide view over the rooftops of Zurich's old town, the Limmat and, in clear weather, as far as the Alps. The ascent leads over 187 steep and narrow steps to the viewing platform and is particularly worthwhile on clear days. The tower is accessible for a fee.
- Good to know: With the Zürich Card, the tower ascent is free of charge.
- Tip: The narrow staircase requires surefootedness – wear good shoes.
