The Brutalist-style church in Hérémence is a remarkable site not to be missed. Its original architecture, with its bold lines and curves, makes it an unusual and unusual curiosity that is a must-see.
Dedicated to St-Nicolas, it was built by Basel architect Walter Förderer like a boulder that fell in the middle of the village, from which he claims to have sculpted a church. Criticised at the time of its construction by the press in French-speaking Switzerland, it has been the pride and joy of the villagers since its foundation stone was laid in 1968, recognised as a building that will live on for posterity. The dam's little sister, it was built a few years after the titanic Grande Dixence project. Constructed from concrete, it symbolises the link with the dam epic that turned a hitherto self-sufficient village life upside down. More than a symbol, it's a tribute.
Don't be intimidated by this imposing mass of concrete, push open the door and enter its remarkable interior. Admission is free. A "Sound and Light" presentation will show you the special features of this extraordinary place. You'll find yourself loving it a little, a lot, passionately... One thing's for sure, this building will not leave you indifferent!
