Chemin du Jura
Overview
Intro
The scenic path through the hilly, wooded Jura landscape runs mainly along a ridge and ends at the Etang de Lucelle on the French border. At Les Ordons, the views over the Jura chain, the Alps, the Black Forest, the upper Rhine valley, the Vosges and part of Franche-Comté are magnificent.
Description
The first stage of the Chemin du Jura begins in Delémont, the capital of the canton of Jura. The historic town is nestled in the densely forested Jura hills between Basel and Biel. Medieval buildings, monumental figure fountains and attractive museums feature prominently in the old quarter.
A slightly ascending path leads under the northern city gate and out of the settlement area. On a beautiful trail through the forest, you reach La Haute-Borne. On the plateau, you initially follow a gravel road that later becomes an asphalt road. Splendid views in all directions beckon from the ridge.
Past vast fields and beautiful solitary trees, the highest point of the stage is reached at just under 1,000 metres above sea level. A dominant 80-metre-high transmission mast stands nearby. From Les Ordons, you can see the Jura chain, the Alps, the Black Forest, the upper Rhine valley, the Vosges and part of Franche-Comté in good weather.
The scenic path now winds northwards through meadows and forests across the ridge. At first, it goes up and down, then from Grande Roche onwards, only downhill to Lucelle. The hamlet lies at the end of a narrow valley on the French border. The small Etang de Lucelle was created by monks in the 12th century. Initially used as a fish pond, the outflow later served to run mills, carpentry workshops, forges and foundries. Today, a wheelchair-accessible path and educational trail lead around the pond through the nature reserve.
