The snowshoe trek winds its way through snow-covered larch forest to the sunny Hannig mountain, high above Saas-Fee. Spectacular views over the Saas Valley with its 4,000-metre peaks, the pretty villages and the glacier landscape will reward you along the way.
Description
As the name suggests, the snowshoe trek starts at the valley station of the Hannigalp cable car in Saas-Fee and leads up to the sun-kissed Hannig mountain restaurant. Saas-Fee is bustling in winter, but it wasn't always like this. Although the mountain village at the foot of the Dome gained in importance with the rise of alpinism and the first ascent of the Strahlhorn in 1855, winter tourism in the Saas Valley developed relatively late. It only took off with the opening of the road from Saas-Grund to Saas-Fee in 1951. Today, the resort is one of the most popular winter sports destinations.
The snowshoe trail leads from the valley station leisurely uphill, crossing the Hohneggweg and zigzagging further up into the larch forest. At Café Alpenblick, you can enjoy the views over the village of Saas-Fee and the mountain panorama with the Allalinhorn's 4,000-metre-high peak, the Almagellerhorn and Plattenhorn, and the Weissmies and Lagginhorn, which tower impressively above the Saas Valley. The trail then dips briefly into the forest again before reaching the alpine huts of Hannigalp.
As you leave the tree line behind, the end of the tour, the mountain station of the Hannigalp cable car, is already within reach. Once at the top, the sun terrace of the Hannig mountain restaurant offers an inviting environment where you can enjoy the brilliant winter sun and the Saas summit panorama to the full before taking the cable car back down to the valley.
