Jurapark-Aargau-Route
Overview
Intro
Magnificent views of the Alps, the Table Jura and the Black Forest beckon on your journey over mountain passes. Where dinosaurs once left their tracks, you ride over wooded hills and past historic castles. Finally, it's time to enjoy the ride along the River Aare as you coast along almost effortlessly.
Description
The stage begins at the well-known dinosaur site of Frick. You quickly leave behind the historic market town's last houses, climbing past high-crowned orchards and charming farmsteads towards the Alt Tierstein castle ruins. Apple, pear and cherry trees adorn the meadows along the way. They form a mosaic-like landscape with wild hedges, dry-stone walls, and forests. The views are particularly stunning in spring when the fruit trees blossom in all their glory. As you arrive at the castle complex, magnificent views open up over the Table Jura to the Black Forest.
Along the border between the cantons of Aargau and Baselland, the route continues to Anwil, known as "Ammel" in the local dialect. From charming Oltingen, the last major climb leads up to the Barmelweid Clinic. The "Barmelweid" was built in 1912 as a sanatorium for tuberculosis patients. Today, the rehab clinic's restaurant is a perfect place for a break. Not far from the Barmelweid is the Geissflue ridge. At 908 metres above sea level, it is not only the highest point in the canton of Aargau, but also the number of the beautiful Jurapark Aargau route.
On the last section, you whiz through the forest down into the Benkental valley. The route continues gently up and down to the Staffelegg pass, accompanied by spectacular views of the Aare valley and the Alpine chain with its snow-covered peaks. Below the Gisiflue, you discover the historic castle complex of the Schenkenberg ruins and Kasteln Castle, before passing Wildenstein Castle, perched on a rocky outcrop a little later. After that, you just leisurely coast along the banks of the Aare.
