Intro

Unspoilt nature in Val Müstair: up and down but with no major gradients, this comfortable snowshoe trail takes you through sparse forests, along the snowy Rom stream and across wetlands, broad meadows and grazing land. Your view along the way: the wide valley, pretty hamlets and the Val Müstair mountains.

Description

The carefree way to explore Val Müstair in winter: follow the snowshoe trail from Fuldera Daint to Sta. Maria. It follows the valley floor, with no major ascents. The starting point is opposite the “Jäger” parking area in Fuldera. With the snow crunching underfoot, you trek through a sparse larch forest to reach the other side of the valley. You join the valley trail at this point. La Palüds plain, heaven on earth for cross-country skiers, opens up towards the valley here. This is also the home of Dario Cologna, the Olympic cross-country champion. In view: the peaks of Piz Daint and Piz Dora. Immerse yourself in tranquillity along the banks of the Rom stream, and let nature have her way with you – what is known as forest bathing, Val Müstair style.

The path follows the course of the stream and switches to the other side of the valley in Furom. Then comes a gentle climb across the Prasüras pastures. You descend slowly through “Val da Arche Gronda” valley, with alternating forest and meadowland. At the edge of the forest, the path continues past Valchava to Chalchera, where remains of lime kilns can be seen. The historic lime kiln can also be visited free of charge in winter. Here you can learn all about CaCO3, CO2 and H20. Please note: these are not the names of bears! After traversing the Bos-chetta area, the cross-shaped village of Sta. Maria can be seen on the Döss da las Levras elevation, facing out of the valley.

The broad valley is before you, framed by snow-clad mountains such as Piz Terza. Behind it: Müstair, the last village before the Italian border with the Monastery of St. John, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983. From Faschabella, snowshoe trekkers enjoy lovely views of the sunlit side of the valley. In Sielva, the trail passes below Switzerland's smallest hospital, heading back for a while along the Rom stream again. After passing the biotopes of the Planschumpeder nature conservation area, it is only a short distance to the centre of Sta. Maria village.

An enjoyable tour includes the careful planning of the same. Please inform yourself in advance at the local information center about the route and weather conditions. Depending on the season and weather conditions, this route may be blocked or interrupted
