Zentralschweiz Skate
Overview
Intro
The Zentralschweiz Skate is an interesting, scenic and generally rather demanding route from the Zugersee lake to the Vierwaldstättersee lake. The lakeside sections are also suitable for families and can be combined with a boat trip.
Description
The route begins in the middle of Lucerne between the train terminal and the boat landing stage. From here you have a nice view of the handsome buildings on the lakeshore. Some of the city’s landmarks are just a short distance away. The Chapel Bridge, for instance, which is considered to be Europe’s oldest covered bridge. Lake water flows through the impressive Cultural and Congress Centre, which is mirrored on the aluminium ceiling.
The route takes you in southern direction through Neustadt, along the Allmend and the allotment gardens to Horw. Following the train tracks you continue on an excellent road along the lakeshore to Hergiswil. Near the lake, the route runs through residential neighbourhoods. You pass an outdoor pool and playgrounds on the lakeshore and also the famous glass factory of Hergiswil. It was completely renovated over the past few years and offers a range of attractive features, including a tour, a museum, a shop, a park, a restaurant and paddle boat rentals.
After Hergiswil the route follows the lakeshore, parallel with the A2 national highway. Cross Acheregg bridge to get to Stansstad. The village is nestled between Bürgenstock mountain and Mount Pilatus. The heavy traffic on the shore of Lake Lucerne now gives way to the peaceful shore of Lake Alpnach. Once you leave the lake, you arrive in Stans, the capital of the Canton Nidwalden. From here, the historic funicular approaches Stanserhorn mountain in the south. The spacious village centre, which is surrounded by attractive old residences, a former Capuchin monastery and Sankt Klara monastery bear witness to the town’s rich history.
Across luscious meadows through the Stanser and Buochser Allmend you reach the airport of Buochs. A small airplane will occasionally take off here in rural Nidwalden. After Buochs the trail returns to the shore of Lake Lucerne. Swimming spots and restaurant terraces shaded by plane trees may tempt you to take a break. The views range far across the surrounding mountains of Central Switzerland. The route ends at the boat landing stage of Beckenried. The cable car is just a few steps away. Now you can choose between a leisurely boat ride back to Lucerne and a cable car ride taking you up to Klewenalp in just ten minutes.
An enjoyable tour includes the careful planning of the same. Please inform yourself in advance at the local information center about the route and weather conditions. Depending on the season and weather conditions, this route may be blocked or interrupted
