Simmen Falls
Overview
Intro
5 kilometres behind the village of Lenk in the canton of Bern, the young Simme plunges about 200 metres into the depths. On the Barbara Bridge, the spray splashes into your face. Further up, the river emerges from the rock at the "Sibe Brünne".
The Simmen Falls at a glance
The Simmen Falls are located at the back of the Obersimmental, 5 kilometres behind the village of Lenk. Over several rock steps, the Simme plunges about 200 meters deep and envelops everything in a fine water mist. It begins further up on Alp Rezliberg, where spring water emerges from a limestone wall in a 30-metre-wide fan at the "Sibe Brünne".
What to experience
Standing in the spray mist on the Barbara Bridge (30 minutes)
From the Simmenfälle restaurant, you climb along the roaring Simme up to the Barbara Bridge. Here you are so close to the waterfall that the spray splashes refreshingly in your face. The bridge is located on a weir that has been diverting the Simme since the late 18th century and protecting the valley floor from flooding.
- Good to know: The narrow mountain path at the falls is only accessible uphill.
- Tip: Alternatively, take the evenly ascending Rezlibergweg for the ascent.
Ascend to the source of the Simme (1–1.5 hours)
At the Simmenfälle restaurant, follow the course of the Simme uphill, past the Barbara Bridge, through the forest and over pastures. After 2 kilometres, the path flattens out and you reach Alp Rezliberg in front of a mighty limestone face. Ice-cold spring water shoots out of it into 7 main branches, the "Sibe Brünne".
- Good to know: There is a mountain restaurant on the alp; check the opening hours in advance.
- Tip: Continue to the Flueseeli via the steep mountain path, which requires surefootedness.
Walk across the valley floor to the end of the valley (1.5 hours)
From the village of Lenk you follow the wide path comfortably into the valley, past the Lenkerseeli with its AlpKultur playground. Afterwards, the path leads along meadows and forests, with the Wildstrubel massif always in view. At the end of the valley, you will reach the Simmenfälle restaurant with a playground and a petting zoo with pygmy goats.
- Good to know: The path is mostly flat and suitable for strollers.
- Tip: Return to Lenk from the Simmenfälle stop by bus 283.
