Andermatt in Winter: When a Wedding Becomes a Unique Spectacle A Wedding Planners Point of view. Written by Melanie Thun
Intro
Some weddings are more memorable than others.
And then there are the ones that people talk about for a long time afterwards.
That’s exactly the kind of event I plan. Not just beautiful celebrations, but unique concepts with character and atmosphere. Weddings that don't feel like they've been copied from a template, but that reflect the couple themselves. For me, it's never just about flowers, music or a lovely dinner. It’s about evoking emotions, engaging guests, and creating a setting where memories are made. For a weekend to feel effortless, stylish and natural, however, it takes far more than just good ideas behind the scenes. It takes experience, calmness, problem-solving skills and attention to every detail.
That’s exactly why I love places like Andermatt in winter.
The snow-covered Alps provide a stunning natural backdrop. It’s already there. At the same time, it is precisely this environment that presents challenges that can only be understood by someone who has organised weddings at this level before. Sudden weather changes, transport routes, tight timeframes, temperature, technical requirements at high altitudes, staff planning and coordinating schedules between mountain and valley all determine whether a day is merely successful or truly extraordinary.
About Andermatt
Welcome Dinner: The Start of a Special Weekend
The weekend began with a welcome dinner that was intended to be more than just a meal together. It was the first impression. The first emotional anchor. It was the moment when the guests realised that this wedding was going to be different.
The aesthetic: Switzerland's traditions given a modern twist. Red and white were stylishly incorporated throughout. High-quality stationery with exquisite calligraphy and historic Swiss stamps added a lovely touch.
My task was to create a concept that was rooted in the local area, yet still felt modern and sophisticated. Tradition without clichés. Elegance without over-the-top theatrics.
The evening itself was warm, relaxed and full of atmosphere. There was raclette, Swiss specialities, selected cheeses and mulled wine in the crisp mountain air. It was just the right blend of indulgence, intimacy and light-heartedness.
The Wedding Day: When every Detail must be Perfect!
The big day began the following morning. For the guests, it was a time of great anticipation. For me, however, it had already started hours earlier. While the bride and groom were supposed to start the day feeling relaxed, there were already numerous tasks running in parallel behind the scenes, such as briefings with service providers, equipment checks, weather updates, transport coordination, set-up checks and final adjustments.
The Chedi Andermatt: Style begins from the very first Moment
Our day began at The Chedi Andermatt, a hotel synonymous with timeless elegance, quality, and tranquillity. It features dark wood, warm lighting and natural stone, as well as a design that is modern yet fits perfectly into the Alps. For me, choosing a hotel is never just about the rooms. It's where emotions begin. It's where you get ready, take the first photos and enjoy those last quiet moments before the ceremony. This is often where the mood for the whole day is set. With champagne in the room, a view of snow-capped peaks, perfectly coordinated outfits, and that special peace before the big moment, The Chedi provided the perfect setting for it all.
The Gondola: Romance for Guests, Precision behind the Scenes
Then the doors to the gondola opened. For the guests, it was the start of an emotional journey upwards. For me, it was one of the most demanding parts of the day. A mountain ceremony isn’t just about the view, after all. It’s about logistics. Technical requirements, lighting, sound, floristry, bar equipment, furniture, staff and countless other details had to be coordinated and brought up the mountain at the right time and in the right order. Almost eleven trips on the gondola were needed. My role was to keep track of everything, set priorities, react spontaneously and ensure that everything was ready at the top before the first guest arrived. The guests were meant to experience a sense of ease. What was needed was structure.
A Ceremony with a View
Once they had reached the summit, the guests were treated to a ceremony against the backdrop of a breathtaking panorama. The Alps were blanketed in white. Crisp winter air. Silence. A string quartet accompanied their entrance. Moments like these are why I love this profession. When everything comes together. When the atmosphere arises quite naturally through the setting, the music, the timing and the emotion, rather than being artificially created.
Cocktail Hour and Dinner: A Memorable Experience rather than a Standard Programme
After the ceremony, the atmosphere became more lively. A saxophonist provided the soundtrack for the cocktail hour, while signature drinks specially created for the bride and groom were served. One of these was a hot espresso martini, which was perfect for a winter's day in the mountains. Meanwhile, a Cuban cigar roller transformed the traditional craft into an interactive experience, sparking conversations and creating authentic moments of surprise. Dinner featured a five-course Japanese omakase menu accompanied by a live band. My work here lies in striking a balance, creating transitions, reading the energy, managing the flow, and ensuring that the evening unfolds naturally — never rigidly, hurriedly or haphazardly.
After-Party: As the Evening drew to a Close
At 10 pm, we headed back down into the valley. But the evening wasn’t over yet. The hotel’s ski room, which is used for storing ski equipment in winter and hiking and mountain bike gear in summer, had been transformed into a stylish after-party venue for the night. I particularly love spaces like this. They show what’s possible when you recognise potential. With the right lighting, music and design, a functional space can be transformed into a place brimming with energy. First the dancers kicked off the party, then the band took over and the dance floor quickly filled up. A particular highlight was the Espresso Martini Tower, which was a staged moment that matched the night’s energy perfectly
What took place in Andermatt was no ordinary celebration. It was a weekend full of style, emotion and surprises, with every detail meticulously planned. To me, that is what luxury is all about: not the obvious trappings, but the quality behind the scenes.
