Overview
Intro
Take the longest continuous cogwheel railway in the world through the Bernese Oberland to Kleine Scheidegg. On your ride, you look deep into the Lauterbrunnen Valley and get up close and personal with the famous Eiger North Face.
The Wengernalpbahn Cog Railway at a glance
The Wengernalpbahn leads from Lauterbrunnen and Grindelwald up to Kleine Scheidegg at 2061 metres. The panorama trains run every half hour, past alpine meadows and through tunnels. Along the route from Lauterbrunnen is the car-free mountain village of Wengen. On Kleine Scheidegg there is a connection to the Jungfrau Railway to the Jungfraujoch.
What to experience
Ride on the Wengernalpbahn from Lauterbrunnen (45 minutes)
Board the panorama train in Lauterbrunnen and ride up to Kleine Scheidegg. After a short time, you will be looking deep down into the fascinating Lauterbrunnen Valley. At the Wengernalp stop, you can look out over the mighty Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau mountains.
- Good to know: You can take a break in Wengen and visit the car-free village.
- Tip: On the right side of the train you have the best view of the Lauterbrunnen valley and the mountains.
Panoramic hike to the Männlichen (2.5 hours)
From Kleine Scheidegg, a wide high-altitude hiking trail leads to the Männlichen at 2343 metres. You hike slightly uphill for 4.5 kilometres through alpine meadows and a protected pine forest. The triumvirate of Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau accompanies you along the entire route.
- Good to know: The trail is well marked and also suitable for families with prams.
- Tip: Take the cable car back from Männlichen to Wengen or Grindelwald.
Sleigh ride Jungfrau Eiger Run (1.5 hours)
From the Eiger Glacier station, you drive 13 kilometres down to Grindelwald Grund. The route alternates between wide panoramic passages with a view of the foothills of the Alps, the mighty Eiger north face in the back and the steepest section between Alpiglen and Brandegg. Sleds are available for rent in Grindelwald, for example.
- Good to know: A helmet is an essential part of the basic equipment for a fast descent.
- Tip: The Alpiglen–Brandegg section is illuminated in the evening.
