This is Unterwasser
The mountain village of Unterwasser is a starting point for hiking and skiing on Chäserrugg. It lies at just over 900 metres in the canton of St. Gallen, in the Toggenburg region between Mount Säntis and the seven peaks of the Churfirsten range.
Discover Unterwasser
The world-renowned architecture firm Herzog & de Meuron designed Unterwasser station. Here you'll find a café, tourist information and the mountain railway. From the village, it's a 10-minute walk to the Thur Waterfalls, where the Säntisthur River plunges 23 metres in two stages. At the Stofel dairy, you can buy cheeses made from cow's, sheep's and goat's milk. Its hayflower cheese is known as far away as the USA.
Hiking on Chäserrugg
A funicular and cable car take you via Iltios to Chäserrugg at 2,262 metres. The easternmost of the seven Churfirsten peaks drops steeply towards Lake Walen. Enjoy regional specialities in the summit restaurant designed by Herzog & de Meuron. On the circular trail across the Rosenboden plateau, you can see more than 500 peaks in six countries. Follow the ridge to Hinterrugg, the highest of the Churfirsten peaks.
Skiing and tobogganing on Chäserrugg
Unterwasser is part of the Chäserrugg ski area, with 50 kilometres of pistes stretching to Alt St. Johann. Skiers and snowboarders can descend from the summit via Iltios all the way to the village. At Iltios, children learn their first turns at the ski school's Kids Village. The toboggan run leads from the Stöfeli middle station via Iltios to Unterwasser. Toboggans can be hired on site.
Around Unterwasser
In summer, follow the Sound Trail to the Schwendi Lakes and bring 27 sound installations to life. Here you'll also find Klanghaus Toggenburg, a wooden building shaped like an instrument you can walk through. Further stages of the trail lead to Alp Sellamatt and Wildhaus. Down the valley, take the PostBus via Nesslau to Schwägalp, then ride the cable car up Mount Säntis.
