Intro

The River Aa at times crashes over rocks, then squeezes through wedge-shaped boulders or lingers in a quiet stream bed.

An ancient stone bridge marks the entrance to the wild and romantic Aa Gorge at the end of Lake Eugeni. This is where the Engelberg section of the Aa thunders down into the valley between huge boulders. Quite a memorable spectacle. The stone bridge is just one of the many bridges you'll encounter on your journey through the gorge. Again and again, you cross the Aa via stone, metal or steel bridges, hiking alongside the stream on either bank. The end of the gorge is again marked by an ancient stone bridge.

The easy two-hour hike through the Aa Gorge is especially good on hot summer days. Numerous fire pits and picnic areas along the trail invite you to take a break and linger for a while.

Getting there: With the Zentralbahn railway to Engelberg, from there on foot along the Lake Eugeni to the ancient stone bridge.
