Lucerne is picture-perfect. It is located on the shores of Lake Lucerne, not far from spectacular mountain day trip destinations like the Rigi. Lucerne is the urban centre of Central Switzerland.

A well-earned reward. A cable car ride from Brunnen to Urmiberg is followed by a challenging hike to the Känzeli lookout point. From there, it is not far to Rigi Kaltbad. This is the location of the middle station of the Vitznau-Rigi Kulm cog railway. This is the oldest mountain railway in Europe and celebrates its 150th anniversary in 2021. This historic event is being celebrated throughout the year. 

The Rigi is one of the most popular mountain destinations for day trippers. Given its majestic location between three lakes, easy access by train and panoramic views, it’s not hard to understand why. For good reason the Rigi is known as the “Queen of the Mountains”. 

The third stage of the William Tell Trail descends steeply and spectacularly from Rigi Kaltbad into the valley below. A ride on the cog railway is an adventure in itself and ends in Vitznau.

The picturesque village is right on the shores of Lake Lucerne. Your boat will be ready and waiting. This has to be one of the most beautiful ways to arrive in the city of Lucerne. Glide over the crystal-clear lake in a light breeze, absorbing the wonders of nature and simply relaxing. When it comes to different options, Lake Lucerne leaves nothing to be desired: historic paddle steamers operate on the water alongside ultra-modern motor cruisers.

The next highlight comes as you enter the city of Lucerne. On the left is the Lucerne Congress Centre (KKL) – an architectural masterpiece – in the centre you can see the famous Chapel Bridge and on the right the distinctive spires of the Hofkirche. The city is just waiting to be discovered as you come down from the mountains. Lucerne has so much to offer and is remarkable in its diversity. There are, for example, tourist highlights, such as the world-famous Lion Monument. This is especially worth a visit in 2021, when the stone lion celebrates its 200th anniversary. 

In addition to all the sights on offer, Lucerne also scores highly as a summer city. After a hike, wander along the promenade, treat yourself to an ice cream and simply let your legs dangle in the water – the city of lights is the perfect choice. The Lido is at the end of the promenade. In addition to a huge lawn for sunbathing and a swimming pool, the magnificent sandy beach will come as a welcome surprise. Take off your hiking boots, slip into your swimwear and plunge into the turquoise-blue lake. Swim with a sandy beach behind you and the mountain panorama in front of you – only in Lucerne. 

Is there anything that could trump this experience? Absolutely! A short barefoot walk across the beach will take you to the Lido Beach House. Sip a drink on the sun terrace or enjoy an exquisite snack from its creative kitchen – the Lido Beach House is famous for these delights. The waves of the liners break gently on one of the most beautiful beaches in Switzerland and your eyes sweep across the lake and up to the Pilatus. Lucerne’s local mountain is the starting point for the fourth stage of the William Tell Trail. The time has come: take off your shoes and enjoy.
