Climb on suspended wooden walkways through the Durnand Gorge near Martigny in Valais. 330 steps lead you between narrow rock walls past 14 waterfalls. At the entrance, a restaurant with regional specialties awaits you.
Gorges du Durnand at a glance
The gorge is a 10-minute drive from Martigny in the canton of Valais. Since 1877, footbridges have led through the narrow rock gully. The gorge is about 1 kilometre long and the ascent overcomes 200 meters in altitude. Admission is paid and there is a free car park at the entrance.
What to experience
Climb through the gorge (1 hour)
From the restaurant, a path takes you to the Durnand stream, where the hanging wooden walkways begin. 330 steps lead you along the thundering waterfalls. You hike back through the quiet forest, past wild berries.
- Good to know: In bad weather, the gorge may remain closed.
- Tip: Wear shoes with good tread, the jetties are steep and often wet.
Taste local specialties
At the entrance to the gorge is the restaurant of the Gorges du Durnand. Here you can fortify yourself with regional cuisine, such as perch fillets, snails or the in-house "Fondue des Gorges". In autumn, a game menu will be added.
- Good to know: The restaurant is open from February to December.
- Tip: For groups of 20 or more people, there is the Carnotzet, a small banquet room.
