Intro

Above Adelboden in the canton of Bern lies the Engstligenalp. The cable car takes you up in 7 minutes, past the 600-meter-high Engstligen Falls. At the top, flat paths, mountain streams and cows grazing in summer await you.

The Engstligenalp at a glance

The Engstligenalp is located at 1964 metres above Adelboden in the Bernese Oberland and is one of the largest plateaus in the Swiss Alps. A glacier has ground the ground flat and the Wildstrubel massif rises all around. The plain is one of the landscapes of national importance and is a nature reserve.

What to experience

Walk to the edge of the Engstligen Falls (1 hour)

The waterfall circuit starts at the mountain station and follows the upper course of the Engstligen Falls. You watch as the water collects behind a small dam wall and plunges 600 meters over the edge of the rock right behind it. From the station, an obstacle-free circular route of 4.4 kilometres leads around the plateau.

  • Good to know: The Engstligenalp is a nature reserve, mountain biking is not allowed.
  • Tip: Treat yourself to an alpine breakfast in the cheese dairy and watch the dairymen make cheese.

Master the Chäligang via ferrata (3 hours)

The Chäligang leads you from the valley station "Unter dem Birg" directly past the Engstligen Falls up to the Engstligenalp. You usually climb on natural rock and are secured to the steel cable throughout. The via ferrata climbs 260 meters in altitude. Its K2 difficulty level is ideal for beginners.

  • Good to know: You can rent a harness, helmet and via ferrata set at the valley station.
  • Tip: The bouldering course on the flat offers an easier variant for families.

Cross-country skiing and snowshoeing

The winter season of the Engstligenalp is one of the longest in the Bernese Oberland. From December to the beginning of May, cross-country ski trails, groomed winter hiking trails and snowshoe routes on the plain await you, plus a small ski area with groomed slopes. On the ascent with the chairlift you will see the frozen Engstligen Falls.

  • Good to know: You can only get back to the valley by train in winter.
  • Tip: From December to March, you can eat fondue in the igloo below the mountain station.
