Intro

Drive over the Grimsel Pass and immerse yourself in an archaic high mountain world of granite and water. At 2164 meters, the pass connects the Bernese Oberland with the Valais and is the starting point for numerous hikes.

The Grimsel Pass at a glance

The Grimsel Pass at 2164 meters connects Innertkirchen in the Bernese Oberland with Gletsch in Valais. The pass road leads past three reservoirs: The Räterichsbodensee, the Grimselsee and the Totensee at the top of the pass. The area is one of the most mineral-rich regions in the Alps. The pass is open from June to October.

What to experience

Drive over the Grimsel Pass

The pass road winds from Innertkirchen through barren granite landscapes up to the top of the pass. On the way you will see the Räterichsbodensee and the Grimselsee with its turquoise water. At the top of the pass you will discover the small Totesee directly on the watershed between the North Sea and the Mediterranean Sea. Restaurants here offer catering with a view.

  • Good to know: Many hikes into the surrounding mountains start from here.

Grimsel Undergrund – Guided tour of tunnels and power plants (2 hours)

With the hospice cable car you float over the Spitallamm dam down to the Grimsel 1 power plant. From there, a tunnel bus will take you to the Grimsel 2 pumped storage plant, which is located 500 metres below Lake Oberaar in the granite. The highlight is the Gerstenegg crystal fissure, which was discovered during tunnel construction and placed under protection.

  • Good to know: It is cool in the tunnel – sturdy shoes and warm clothing are recommended.
  • Tip: Book tickets online in advance, places are limited.

Family hike Oberaar Trail (2.5 hours)

Take the Sidelhornbahn from the Grimsel Hospice up to the starting point of the hike. The path leads over granite slabs to the Hüsegghütte and on past the Trübtensee to the Bäregg. From the Bäregg you have a view of the Oberaarsee and the Oberaar glacier. The Oberaarbahn takes you back to the starting point Grimsel Hospiz.

  • Good to know: The Oberaarbahn only runs from the end of June to the beginning of October.
  • Tip: At Berghaus Oberaar you can spend the night with a view of Lake Oberaar.
