Intro
Take the Rhaetian Railway over the Landwasser Viaduct in the canton of Graubünden. The 65-metre-high bridge leads in a curve directly into a rock tunnel and is an UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The Landwasser Viaduct at a glance
The Landwasser Viaduct is located on the Albula Line of the Rhaetian Railway near Filisur. The 136-metre-long bridge made of dark limestone is supported by 5 pillars and spans the Landwasser valley at a height of 65 metres. Around 60 trains cross the structure every day. It has been an UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Rhaetian Railway since 2008.
What to experience
With the viaduct shuttle over the viaduct (10 minutes)
In Filisur, get on the convertible car of the viaduct shuttle and drive over the Landwasser Viaduct to the Schmitten GR Landwasser Viaduct stop. From there, a few steps lead to the Hennings viewing platform with the best view of the bridge. The return journey leads over the viaduct again.
- Good to know: The shuttle runs daily from the end of June to the end of August.
- Tip: In the direction of Filisur, sit on the right to get a better view of the tunnel entrance.
Hiking on the Albula Railway Adventure Trail (5–6 hours)
Hike from Preda via Bergün to Filisur along the UNESCO World Heritage route of the Rhaetian Railway. Information boards tell about technology and everyday life in the Albula Valley. From the vantage point, photograph the viaduct with the passing trains from one of the best perspectives.
- Good to know: Good hiking boots and surefootedness are required.
- Tip: Break the long hike into 3 more relaxing day hikes.
Albula Railway Museum in Bergün (1–2 hours)
In the Albula Railway Museum in Bergün, you can learn how the Albula Line was built on 4 floors. A true-to-the-original model railway shows the route including the Landwasser Viaduct in miniature format. The museum also offers a tour with special stops for young guests.
- Good to know: Audio guides are available in several languages.
- Tip: Combine the museum visit with a trip over the viaduct from Bergün.
