Liestal Observation Tower
Overview
Intro
When the weather is clear, the 30-meter Liestal observation tower with 150 steps offers unparalleled views across the hills of the Jura all the way to the peaks of Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. The Vosges mountain range and the Black Forest are visible to the north in the direction of Basel.
The tower is located at an altitude of 603 meters above sea level which is also the highest point of the Liestal municipal district. It is an ideal destination for hikers because it can be reached by a wide variety of hiking trails from Liestal or one of the neighboring villages. In 1889 the idea to build a tower with view of the Alps led to the foundation of the Travel and Beautification Association, now known as the Liestal tourism organization. The first structure built in 1891 consisted of wood. After it was struck by lightning, the association decided to replace it with the current iron tower which went up in 1900. A restaurant, fire pits for grilling and a children's playground are available close to the tower.
