What to experience
Ascent to the pinnacle via the Reitschnecke (15–20 minutes)
Via the Reitschnecke, a spiral staircase with cobblestones, you climb up to the pinnacle of the over 400-year-old fortress. At the top, you can enjoy the view of Schaffhausen's old town, the Rhine and the hills of eastern Switzerland. In the evening, the Munot guard rings the Munot bell by hand at 9 p.m.
- Good to know: Admission is free.
Explore Casemate and Moat (20-30 minutes)
The casemate, a massive vault inside the Munot that is massively protected from shelling, is supported by 9 pillars. 4 round light shafts give you light in the fortress. Outside in the moat you will meet the fallow deer of the Munot. The stag bears the name of the incumbent mayor.
- Tip: Combine the visit with a walk through Schaffhausen's old town.
