Intro
Take the nostalgic funicular up to the 120-meter-high Reichenbach Falls in the Bernese Oberland. This is where Sherlock Holmes fought with his archenemy. From 3 viewing terraces you can look out over the roaring masses of water.
The Reichenbach Falls Funicular at a glance
Since 1899, the funicular has been running from Meiringen up to the Reichenbach Falls. Today, from May to October, guests travel to the mountain station 244 metres higher in the faithfully reproduced wooden wagons. At the top, visitors can reach three viewing terraces with a view of the impressive Reichenbach Falls via a 20-minute walk.
What to experience
Ride on the Reichenbach Falls cable car (7 minutes)
From Meiringen train station, take the B 174 bus to the valley station (Klinik Reichenbach stop). On its journey, the historic funicular railway crosses filigree bridges, travels through narrow gorges and along steep rock faces. Near the mountain station you have a wonderful view of the thundering waterfall and the Haslital.
- Good to know: Tickets can be purchased online or directly from the wagon driver at the railway.
- Tip: Parking is limited. It's better to travel by public transport.
Hike over the Reichenbach Falls to the valley station (1 hour)
From the mountain station you hike through the valley basin up towards Zwirgi. You cross the Reichenbach on a bridge above the waterfall. A path leads to the place where the character Sherlock Holmes fell to his death. This is marked with an asterisk. The descent leads via Schwendi back to the valley station.
- Good to know: The path is steep and requires sturdy shoes.
- Tip: In May and June, the waterfall is at its strongest because of the melting snow.
