Intro
This picturesque circular trail passes eleven chapels in and around the village of Appenzell by way of back roads, forest tracks and meadow paths. A series of fantastic views and vistas greet you along the trail.
Description
From the starting point in Appenzell, walk along the lively Hauptgasse. Continue past Kreuzkapelle (Chapel of the Cross) and then straight on to the splendid St. Antonius Kapelle with its Baroque interior. The trail now leads in a wide arc via the Dreifaltigkeitskapelle (Holy Trinity Chapel) to the River Sitter. After crossing over the wonderfully covered wooden bridge, proceed via Lank to the small Kapelle St. Verena. On its north side, a tilted penitence cross sticks in the ground – the only one of its kind in the region. After a short, steep climb you reach the St. Karl Borromäus Kapelle at the "Steig", one of the most historically important chapels in the parish of Appenzell. The village quite literally lies at its feet.
The Chapel Trail now climbs steadily to the ruins of Clanx Castle, the most stunning viewing point on the entire circular trail. The next destination is the beautifully situated Lehnkapelle. After the village of Sammelplatz you soon come to the romantic Waldkapelle St. Ottilia (Forest Chapel of St. Ottilia). St. Ottilia is the patroness of good eyesight. To this day, worshippers come here to scoop water from the fountain, hoping to cure their eye conditions. Above this chapel towers the Alpstein in all its glory and with this view the trail now heads downwards via meadow paths to Steinegg.
There you will find the Chäsmoos-Kapelle with its precious wooden crucifix. Before you follow the Sitter back to Appenzell, you reach the Kapelle St. Magdalena in Steinegg. The ceiling paintings are the work of famous artist Johannes Hugentobler, who also painted many of the colourful houses in the village centre of Appenzell. Soon the St. Anna-Kapelle comes into view, one of the most beautiful rococo chapels in Innerrhoden. Continue to follow the Sitter until the Lourdes-Kapelle greets you on the right on a small hill by the former indoor swimming pool. It is the last chapel on this circular trail, which ends back in Appenzell.
