Intro

From the festival town of Bregenz through the calm Rhine delta with its vast moor landscapes to the Swiss shore with its lively lakeside towns Rorschach, Arbon, and Romanshorn, where roads, railroad, and buildings compete for space at the Swabian sea.

Description

The section of Lake Constance at Lindau linking the island to the mainland is known as the “Kleiner See” (small lake). Lake Constance as a whole is of course very big: It takes eight days to cycle round it following the SwitzerlandMobility stages. There’s more than enough to see: for example Lochau, which is reached by passing by a goods rail depot and lido. While the municipality is in Austria, you don’t notice the border. The cycle paths are wide and the “Mili” military lido is a perfect spot to cool off. The oldest bathing facility on Lake Constance dates back to 1825 and was originally used to train recruits.

Those interested in culture and other connoisseurs are sure to enjoy Bregenz. Have a coffee in the pedestrian area of the regional capital of Vorarlberg or take in an international exhibition at the architecturally striking Kunsthaus – you won’t regret doing either. A panoramic cable car glides up to the Pfänder, Bregenz’s local mountain, while on the water, the lake stage awaits its next performing arts festival. The Bregenzer Ach river feeds into Lake Constance at the “Mehrerauer Seeufer” (Mehrerau lake shore). The golden oriole resident here sings ebulliently and loves the freedom amidst alluvial forests and mighty common oaks. Cuckoos can also be heard – and sometimes even seen. The area where the Rhine flows into Lake Constance is a paradise for birds and early morning cyclists.

The five-kilometre-long canal through which the Alpenrhein River feeds into Lake Constance is known as the Fussacher Durchstich. It was dug out between 1895 and 1900 as part of the Regulation of the Rhine. The Rohrspitz peninsula forms the true heart of the nature reserve in the Rhine delta and follows after a wonderful trip along the Fussacher Bay. Countless plant and animal species enjoy a fine life here in a 2000-hectare green oasis. With a little luck, you’ll see not only curlews, tufted ducks and mute swans in the Old Rhine, but might even spot a few impressive exotic species. The first water buffalo born in Vorarlberg came into the world in October 2016. A journey through Central Europe’s largest freshwater delta from the New to the Old Rhine is a unique experience.

You cross the Old Rhine at Rheineck. When you reach Swiss soil, it’s worth taking a look at the once important port town at the former mouth of the Rhine. Numerous buildings steeped in history bear witness to a vibrant past. You should also have time for a brief detour through the historic park to Wartegg Castle before finishing this impressive stage in Rorschach.

An enjoyable tour includes the careful planning of the same. Please inform yourself in advance at the local information center about the route and weather conditions. Depending on the season and weather conditions, this route may be blocked or interrupted
