Circuit de Hauterive
Overview
Intro
The route is closed until further notice. This loop trail follows the Saane River via forest trails and along the river banks. Expect to see impressive views of the cliffs carved into the sandstone by the river. Another highlight: the buildings of the Hauterive Cistercian Abbey.
Description
The walk starts out near Posieux in the hamlet of Grangeneuve where the Agricultural Institute of the Canton Fribourg has been located since 1888. The main building is called the new barn - “Grange Neuve”. It was built in 1263 by the monks of the adjacent Hauterive Abbey to enhance the agricultural land.
First, the path crosses a rolling beech forest. In the spring, you’re likely to find liverworts here and in many other places along the way. The trail then descends toward the banks of the Saane River, whose source is at Sanetschhorn above Gsteig. Here in the French-speaking part of Fribourg, it is called Sarine River. On a narrow, but magical section, the path continues directly along the water underneath a rock overhang. When it rains or if the water is high, this part of the trail may not be passable. In this case, the hikers take the upper, safer route. The path follows the Saane River through the forest and along the meadow of Prés d’en Bas.
A bridge in the hamlet of La Tuffière crosses the Saane River. The sandstone cliffs formed by the water offer an impressive sight here. The path now continues above the Saane with frequent views of the river’s twists and turns. Later the trail, excavated into the sedimentary rock, descends to the La Souche farm and crosses the river again. The hikers now see the Hauterive Cistercian Abbey, the oldest active monastery in French-speaking Switzerland. The name Hauterive (high riverside) comes from the high sandstone cliffs nearby, forming the right bank of the Saane River. The abbey was established in the 12th century by a local baron. Today it is home to a community of about 20 monks. The abbey can only be visited at certain times, but either way, it is well worth a stop: The abbey shop and the “Le Magasin” store of the Agricultural Institute Grangeneuve both sell products from the Fribourg area.
An enjoyable tour includes the careful planning of the same. Please inform yourself in advance at the local information center about the route and weather conditions. Depending on the season and weather conditions, this route may be blocked or interrupted
