Ascent to St. Chrischona with views of Basel. Varied continuation along the River Birs and via Bruderholz to the St. Margreten vantage point. Finally a city tour with highlights such as the Basel old-town quarter, city hall and market square.
Description
The third stage is the shortest of this route. It begins in Haltingen, where you can still see the vineyards of Markgräflerland in the distance. The Gutedel grape variety thrives particularly well in this sunny part of Germany.
The contrast could scarcely be greater when you leave Haltingen. On the left is the huge and spacious marshalling yard and on the right is the Krebsbachtal Nature Reserve. Concealed at the edge of the Weil am Rhein residential area, the Krebsbach stream flows through here. The nature reserve is characterised by its diversity within a small area. The forest along the stream bank has wild floodplain characteristics, while in drier areas there is oak and hornbeam woodland. In March and April, there is a colourful carpet of blooming larkspurs, wood anemones, scilla and many other flowers here.
At the Textile Museum in Friedlingen, a district of Weil am Rhein, you can find out interesting facts about the textile history that significantly shaped the city between 1880 and 1982.
You continue on surfaced paths to the Three Countries Bridge. This is a convergence point for the three countries of Germany, France and Switzerland. Ships also sail on the Rhine towards the North Sea here. The port is therefore also a pivotal point for Switzerland’s raw material supplies.
At 248 metres long, the Three Countries Bridge is the longest cantilever pedestrian and bicycle bridge. It has received several architectural awards. You arrive in Huningue in France when you cross the bridge. However, in the opposite direction, the path runs along the banks of the Rhine and continues towards the Swiss border. It is interesting to take a look at the Plyon iron sculpture, which was created in the post-war period as a sign of recovery. You soon arrive on Swiss soil and the city of Basel. Another half hour later, you are standing in front of the Middle Bridge near the Schifflände. This means that you have reached the destination point for the final stage of the Three-Country Hiking Trail.
