Intro
The isolated terrace above Lac Léman boasts an impressive panorama with the mighty snow-covered Mont Blanc. The natural idyll of Marais de la Versoix lies hidden, before you suddenly arrive in cosmopolitan Genève.
Description
The Waffenplatz military training area in Bière is owned by the Swiss Confederation and has grown to a total of 870 hectares over the years. The first section of this leg passes through this area. You will catch a sudden glimpse of Lake Geneva, majestic against the Mont Blanc massif. From there, the route goes downhill and crosses the river Toleure, which meanders for a while before joining the Aubonne. In Saubraz, the uphill stretch is rewarded with nice cold drinkable water. The small settlements of Gimel, featuring “Les Sept-Fontaines”, and Longirod then follow. With little traffic to speak of, an undulating landscape and several little teasing glimpses of Lake Geneva, you may find yourself pedalling at a more leisurely pace.
Little “La Garenne” zoo was opened in 1965 as both an animal care centre and wildlife park. Bassins boasts marvellous fountains known as “Les six fontaines historiques de Bassins”. However, in high summer, not all of them will have water flowing. Between Bassins and Arzier-Le Muids, you will only meet other cyclists weaving through the wood, gorge and the area as a whole. The train pulls off some impressive feats here too.
While Genolier may be far from any major through roads, the village roundabout around the fountain will be bustling with traffic. Then come Genolier, Givrins, Gingins, Grens and Borex, where the route becomes noticeably more urban. After Chavannes-de-Bogis, you will enjoy delightful stretches of woodland, one of which has the river Versoix passing through it. The source of this 27-kilometre-long river is in France and its banks boast wonderful moorland and floodplain landscapes.
Lake Geneva is not to be missed either and, once you reach Chambésy railway station, you will not stray far from its shores until you reach Geneva railway station. You might be struck by the large black vehicles bearing the diplomatic marking “CD”. With around 60,000 metres of cycling behind you, the Jet d’Eau will now come into view, the fountain in Lake Geneva that sprays water 140 metres into the air. It is an impressive sight to round off this final leg of the journey.
