Intro
The cross-country trail in Matt and Engi offers a chance to follow in the footsteps of the Russian general Suvorov. It is characterised by its sunny location and smooth terrain.
Description
Pursued by the French, the troops of the Russian field marshal Suvorov passed through the Sernf Valley in 1799. The army fought its way southwards as the snow fell – barefoot, hungry, exhausted and soaked to the bone. Cross-country skiers in the 21st century have a far easier time, gliding at a leisurely pace along the historic Suvorov Trail from Matt to Engi. The easy route enjoys many hours of sunshine and is characterised by its smooth terrain.
At the entrance in Matt there is a bus stop, and parking spaces by the village church – the oldest preserved church in the Glarus region. It’s well worth admiring the late Gothic wooden ceiling inside before the tour starts. The trail runs from Matt to Engi along the river Sernf, passing the Freiberg Kärpf on the left-hand side. The ibexes, marmots and golden eagles that inhabit Europe’s oldest game reserve cannot be seen from the valley. Equally, one can only imagine what went on 200 metres above the valley floor in the 17th century. Back then, the Landesplattenberg slate mine in Engi was an important source of income for Glarus and the village. The extracted slate and the products made from it were exported almost throughout the world. The Landesplattenberg was an attraction for geologists and palaeontologists; its geology and the fossils found within it are still the subject of research. Today’s visitors can also take a tour of the tunnel system with its halls over 20 metres high.
The trail runs back alongside the forest to Matt, where guests and tired cross-country skiers board the Matt-Weissenberge cable car for some relaxation on the Sernf Valley’s sun terrace.
