Intro
A mountain village with breathtaking surroundings invites you to stop and stare. Pass by meadows and along the Kander – the river that gave Kandersteg its name – and enjoy ever-changing views of the mountain peaks.
Description
From the station, the path heads in the direction of the valley station for the Oeschinensee gondola lift. The road that leads there is named after an eminent citizen of Kandersteg, the former President of the Confederation, Adolf Ogi. From here, there is a wonderful view of the little church, with the Blüemlisalp massif in the background.
Passing the Oeschinenbahn valley station, the path continues on a slight downward slope to the Kander river. The first notable feature here is the iron-frame bridge from 1912. This footbridge was built at the time the Lötschberg railway was constructed.
From a flat riverside path, you can appreciate the lush vegetation and rush of the river. There are plenty of secluded spots along the way for stopping to take it all in. You are accompanied along the entire route by ever-changing mountain panoramas, letting you constantly discover new perspectives and fascinating new rock formations. You’ll end up back at Bahnhofplatz, where you can enjoy the surrounding mountain vista for the final time before setting off for home with a wonderful set of memories.
