In 1957 the female citizens of Unterbäch were the first women in Switzerland to obtain the right to vote – 14 years before it was adopted nationwide. The Frauenzitate-Trail (Trail of Women’s Quotes) is dedicated to these courageous women. On the snowshoe tour from Brandalp to Unterbäch you will find a variety of quotes from world-famous women.
Description
The snowshoe trail begins in Unterbäch, in the heart of the Upper Valais. Far from the masses of tourists, the charming mountain village is located on a sun-drenched plateau, nestled in the incredible Alpine scenery.
Brandalp is reached within minutes by chairlift. The trail leads past a number of purple signs with the name “Frauenzitate-Trail” on it (Trail of Women’s Quotes). Initially you follow Brandstrasse, going downhill past the Alpenrösli mountain restaurant. At the first right-hand turn, the trail leaves the road and joins the hiking path. For a short, lovely section you follow the Bielsuon, one of the historic irrigation channels of the Valais. After the Alpine hamlet of Ta, you come to a sharp left-hand turn where the second quote is located. At the third, you enter a snow-covered larch-spruce forest. You now descend gently and continue at a leisurely pace in the direction of Unterbäch. More than 15 quotes of women from around the world are displayed along the trail. The fascinating snowshoe hike is provided with various places to sit, rest for a while and enjoy the spectacular views of the mountain panorama. Fifteen minutes before you get to Unterbäch the trail emerges from the forest. In front of you is a mountain village that offers breathtaking views of the Rhone Valley and the snow-covered peaks of the Upper Valais.
With the introduction of the women’s right to vote in 1957, the village in the Upper Valais was far ahead of its times. Unterbäch sent a strong political signal and even caused the global media to report about the unauthorised events in the small Swiss mountain community. Of the 87 females living in Unterbäch at that time, 33 had the courage to go to the local polling station. Two additional quotes of Federal Councillors Micheline Calmy-Rey and Viola Amherd are a highlight of this snowshoe hike.
