Intro

Traversing above Zermatt, this run starts with a steep climb before chasing the changing angles of the Matterhorn. The smooth single trail gets five stars for quality and its views.

Description

With no shortage of trails and spectacular views, car-free Zermatt is the starting point for countless runs, hikes and climbs. This circuit, without lift accessibility, takes runners on a slightly less travelled route above the town, with incredible views of the Matterhorn along the way. Following a smooth ribbon of trail that unwinds along the mountainside, runners can stop at Trift and Zmutt to refuel.

Starting from the busy town centre, the trail quickly climbs up to the Trift Hut through a steep canyon. The ascent then continues before reaching a long flowing traverse facing the Matterhorn. After heading towards the peak’s famous pyramid, the tour descends to the river and weaves through Zmutt. The tiny, 500-year-old village features a cluster of wooden houses with flat stone roofs as well as a few restaurants to stop off at. When you leave Zmutt, the trail angles back downhill to town, past grazing Valais blacknose sheep, and into the larch forest before returning to Zermatt’s main street.

Tip from ALPSinsight: Order the homemade iced tea from the Trift Hut after the steep climb.

An enjoyable tour includes the careful planning of the same. Please inform yourself in advance at the local information center about the route and weather conditions. Depending on the season and weather conditions, this route may be blocked or interrupted
