Description
Surrounded by high but gently sloping mountains, Val Müstair offers the perfect topography for long, flowing single trails. The Val Müstair Bike is one of the most popular routes in the valley, recommended by local bikers. They have developed the single tracks in their spare time to provide locals and guests with a continuous trail experience.
The route starts on the Ofen Pass near Süsom Givè, which is accessible by post bus. Mountain bikes can also be easily shuttled up to the pass by post bus. The first section up to Alp da Munt requires some pedalling power before you can whizz down 1,400 metres on flowing trails into the valley. Along the high-level trail, superb views of the glaciated Ortler and the imposing peaks of Piz Daint and Piz Dora beckon.
The highest point is reached at the Lai da Juata mountain lake. The single-trail descent begins with one of the most scenic trails in the region.
Past moorland and gnarled stone pine forests, you whizz to Alp Champatsch, whose original buildings nowadays stand in the Ballenberg Open-Air Museum. The sunny terrace of the small alp restaurant offers fantastic views over the villages in the valley.
After a short passage on the gravel road that leads through sparse larch forest, you reach the sun-kissed mountain village of Lü. More trail fun is just around the corner. The flowing trail winds its way through the pristine alluvial forests above the Rombach with a constant, gentle gradient. A few tight hairpin bends await on the last section before the village of Müstair. The tour ends at the UNESCO World Heritage monastery of St. Johann, which is well worth a visit. The medieval monastery with museum provides fascinating insights into the life of the Benedictine nuns.
