St-Ursanne: Follow in historical footsteps along the Doubs

The relaxed town of St-Ursanne is celebrating its 1,400th anniversary this year and is looking forward to welcoming plenty of visitors. The town has lost none of its medieval charm over the years and boasts an idyllic location.

New for 2020 is the Circuit Secret, an interactive tour of the town. Using an app, visitors can follow in the footsteps of a famous historian and gain a unique insight into the town’s rich history. The tour was created by a team headed up by the famous illustrator John Howe (Lord of the Rings film trilogy).

Saignelégier: Over the high plateau on horseback

The high plateau situated at 1,000m above sea level is home to the Freiberger horses. The only horse breed native to Switzerland, these animals are famous for their stamina and good temper, making them ideal companions for discovering the region. Anyone staying two nights or more in the canton of Jura can enjoy a free one-hour ride (offer: Tous en selle).

The plateau can also be explored on foot. The warm colours of autumn create a laid-back atmosphere in the Franches-Montagnes.

 St-Imier: Cycle up Mont-Soleil

Starting in St-Imier in the Bernese Jura, take the Funisolaire funicular up Mont-Soleil. The funicular’s name is a reference to the biggest solar power plant in Switzerland, located high above the clouds up the mountain.

Having arrived at the summit, visitors can bask in the autumn sun and enjoy breathtaking scenery with a choice of three bike trails running past idyllic wooded pastures, pretty holiday homes and striking wind turbines. There are plenty of spots along the way for taking a break and recharging your batteries.

Mont-Soleil: Auberge Chez L’Assesseur

This little gem is located adjacent to the bike trail on Mont-Soleil. Built in a style typical of the Jura in the 18th century, the Auberge Chez L’Assesseur is a great place to eat and relax. The former bailiff’s residence is located in a rural spot and boasts glorious views. The cosy restaurant serves hearty and delicious dishes perfectly complemented by a fine bottle of wine.

Fortified by the excellent homemade fare, the rest of the bike tour will be an easy ride.

Les Bois: Espace Paysan Horloger

Close to the railway station in Le Boéchet is the Espace Paysan Horloger. The hotel boasts three doubles, one triple and one family room for four. The building’s history is brought to life in its own museum, so as well as relaxing, guests can also discover more about the history of watchmaking in the Jura.
