Discover the Taubenlochschlucht gorge near Biel/Bienne. Steep rock faces, wooden footbridges and the sound of the river Schüss accompany you through the Bernese Jura. You will experience one of the most popular excursion destinations in the Biel/Bienne region.
The Taubenloch Gorge at a glance
The Taubenlochschlucht lies between Bözingen, a district of Biel/Bienne and Frinvillier in the Bernese Jura. The river Schüss has dug the almost three-kilometre-long gorge into the Jurassic limestone over millions of years. The hiking trail is accessible all year round and is suitable for all fitness levels.
What to experience
Hiking through the gorge (45-60 minutes)
You start in Biel-Bözingen and follow the marked path over wooden footbridges along the river Schüss to Frinvillier. Information boards explain how the limestone layers were formed in the Jurassic Sea around 150 million years ago. The gorge narrows to a few meters in places, the rock walls rise steeply.
- Good to know: Put on sturdy shoes, the path can be wet and slippery.
- Tip: From Frinvillier, the train returns to Biel/Bienne.
Detour to the wildlife park Biel/Bienne
At the entrance to the gorge near Bözingen lies the wildlife park Biel/Bienne. Around 80 native animals live here in near-natural enclosures. Admission is free. From here, it is worth continuing the ascent to the Bözingenberg with a view over Lake Biel and the Three Lakes Region.
- Good to know: In the wildlife park there are picnic areas and a playground.
Family Adventure Trail Riddles in the Taubenloch (45 minutes)
With your smartphone, you can accompany Moritz the squirrel and Charlotte the dipper on a digital scavenger hunt through the gorge. The tour takes you to various posts along the hiking trail and makes the gorge an adventure for young and old.
- Good to know: Charge the battery and activate GPS – the tour runs on your smartphone.
- Tip: Combine the adventure trail with the gorge hike (same route).
