Intro

Take 4 cable cars from Zermatt im Wallis up to Testa Grigia. On the way, the glass floor becomes transparent in individual cabins. At the finish at 3480 meters, you stand with one foot in Switzerland and the other in Italy.

The uphill journey to Testa Grigia at a glance

From Zermatt in Valais, 4 cable cars lead to the highest cable car border crossing in the Alps: The Matterhorn Express to Furi, the aerial tramway to Trockener Steg and the Matterhorn Glacier Ride I and II cable cars over the Klein Matterhorn to the Testa Grigia. The last two sections cross the Theodul Glacier.

What to experience

Drive from Zermatt to Trockener Steg (18 minutes)

At the Matterhorn valley station, you board the Matterhorn Express and float over larch forests and hamlets to Furi. There you change to the aerial tramway to Trockener Steg at 2939 meters. In the station's Infocube you can find out how the Matterhorn Alpine Crossing came about.

  • Good to know: In autumn, operations will be suspended due to the inspection.
  • Tip: In Zermatt, the free local bus takes you to the valley station.

With the Matterhorn Glacier Ride I to the Klein Matterhorn (11 minutes)

You ski from Trockener Steg up to the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise at 3883 meters, the highest mountain station in Europe. In the Crystal Ride cabins, the cloudy glass floor becomes transparent after 3 minutes and reveals a view down to the glacier.

  • Good to know: Because of the height, children only ride from the age of 3.
  • Tip: For a Crystal Ride cabin with a glass floor, you buy an additional ticket.

On the way with the Matterhorn Glacier Ride II (4 minutes)

From the Klein Matterhorn, you float 1.6 kilometres over the Theodul Glacier. Below you lies the ice, next to it rises the Matterhorn. The Swiss-Italian border runs directly in front of the Testa Grigia station. For the souvenir photo, place one foot in each of the two countries.

  • Good to know: To cross the border into Italy, you need a valid ID.
  • Tip: Continue to Breuil-Cervinia and cross the Alps by cable car.
