Intro

Brown bears live above Arosa in a spacious enclosure. You watch them digging and climbing, get up close to them on the adventure trail and learn a lot about animal welfare and the life of bears in the exhibition.

The Arosa Bear Sanctuary at a glance

The Arosa Bear Sanctuary in the canton of Graubünden is the first bear sanctuary of Four Paws in Switzerland. At the middle station of the Weisshornbahn, around 5 bears from poor husbandry conditions have found a species-appropriate home with forest, pastures, rocks and streams. The facility is open from June to October and individual openings are also possible.

What to experience

Watching bears from the visitor platform

From the visitor platform, you can search the slopes for the brown bears. You watch them dig, splash in the creek or stretch in the sun. At various stations you will learn interesting facts about the brown bears and animal welfare. And you can get first-hand information from animal caretakers.

  • Good to know: Leashed dogs are allowed on the visitor platform.
  • Tip: Bears are often most active in the morning and late afternoon.

Walk the Floating Adventure Trail (30-45 minutes)

8 viewing platforms, connected by suspension bridges, lead you at lofty heights from the visitor platform to the northern outdoor area. Up to 6 meters above the ground, you can get closer to the bears than anywhere else and look right into their territory.

  • Good to know: Dogs are not allowed here, with the exception of assistance dogs.
  • Tip: Children under the age of 14 need adult accompaniment.

Visit the animal welfare exhibition

In the exhibition you will learn where the bears come from and what they had to go through. Many previously lived in cramped cages and are only learning to behave like bears in Arosa. Vivid stations show you how a bear lives, eats and survives the winter.

  • Tip: Combine the visit with a break at the Brüggerstuba restaurant right next door.
