Irina Bugoslavska - A Motif becomes Space
Overview
Intro
The exhibition features new portrait works by Leipzig-based artist Irina Bugoslavska.
Between one life and the whole
The exhibition brings together new portrait works made in oil on canvas by Leipzig-based artist Irina Bugoslavska. At its center is a simple, insistent question: How close can a picture become to a person and when does a single life tip over into the whole? The artist‘s paintings negotiate the distance between one life and the whole. The face is not read as a likeness, but as a place where closeness and distance appear at once. Shifts and collapses ask about the moment when form begins to slide, when contours loosen and the portrait oscillates between stability and dissolution. A motif becomes space. Traces find a counterpart and turn into pictorial space: color, application, surface. The portrait is not depicted; it is built. Throughout, the painting stays close to the human being and open to the image, present, physical, restless.
