Intro
In its new collection exhibition, the Fondation Beyeler is presenting around 70 works by over 20 artists.
Inspired by Friedrich Schiller's famous quote "Art is a daughter of freedom" from 1795, the new collection presentation takes the liberty of thematically guiding visitors through the exhibition rooms with new, surprising and unusual juxtapositions.
For example, a portrait of the late Amy Winehouse, painted by Marlene Dumas, opens the presentation together with Ferdinand Hodler's portraits of the terminally ill Valentine Godé-Darel, and the poetic object art of Louise Bourgeois meets paintings by her contemporaries Ad Reinhardt and Barnett Newman.
Further themed exhibition rooms with masterpieces from the collection, including works by Paul Cézanne, Edouard Manet, Elizabeth Peyton, Peter Doig, Wassily Kandinsky, Jean Dubuffet, Piet Mondrian, Alexander Calder, Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso, complete the presentation.
On the occasion of his 70th birthday, a monographic room is dedicated to the internationally influential sculptor Thomas Schütte.
