Intro
Men and Women Facing the Uncertain Hora mortis: A Study of 15th-Century Wills from Saviès.
Lecture at the Auditorium of the Moréchon School Center in Savièse at 7:00 p.m. Valais notarial records are replete with medieval wills. Most often drawn up at the individual’s deathbed, this type of document—based on a standard form—records an emotionally charged moment in which a person’s last wishes are expressed. Arranging for the transfer of one’s assets and saving one’s soul from Purgatory appear to have been central themes in wills during the late Middle Ages. Through the study of 63 15th-century wills from Savièse, this presentation examines how a community prepared for death.
