Funicular, cliff walk and mechanical lifton the Bürgenstock
Overview
Intro
The funicular, cliff walk and mechanical lift on the Bürgenstock represent a triple tribute to the art and technology of the belle époque. The Bürgenstock Bahn, built in 1888, is the oldest electric funicular railway in Switzerland.
The panoramic cliff walk, meanwhile, has been described as “the most beautiful mountain promenade in the world”. From 1900 to 1905, its creators blasted and tunnelled their way through the rock to create a spectacular path 2.5 kilometres long, 500 metres above Lake Lucerne. The year of its completion also saw the open ing of the Hammetschwand Lift. The highest outdoor elevator in Europe travels through the rock and up an elegant tower in just under a minute, offering thrilling and giddying views on its way to the panoramic lookout point at the top of the Bürgenstock plateau, the Hammetschwand (1,132m a.s.l.).
Open: Cliff walk and lift: approx. May to Oct.
Due for completion in 2017 Central Switzerland is witnessing the emergence of a premier resort – the Bürgenstock Resort. Therefore the Bürgenstock Bahn is closed.
