Broye champêtre à vélo
Overview
Intro
Discover the Upper Broye Valley by cycling along its famous river and by crossing rural and forest landscapes.
Description
Moudon is a fine example of Vaud's mediaeval architecture. Located in the central Broye Valley, it is divided into a Lower and an Upper Town. The Upper Town is designated as a "landscape of national importance". Before starting the tour, it's worth taking a detour into the lanes and neighbourhoods, where you can discover townhouses and mansions dating from the 16th to 18th centuries.
As you tackle the first climb towards Neyruz-sur-Moudon, you ride past attractive farms and livestock holdings. At Villars-le-Comte, enjoy the superb views of the Fribourg, Bernese and Savoy Alps. This is also the highest point of the entire tour. Then you pass through the forests of Forel-sur-Lucens: a welcome chance to cool off before riding downhill into the Broye Valley via the Cremin high plateau. The river Broye has a total length of 89 kilometers; until Moudon, it flows through an open depression that resembles a gorge. Then it changes direction and flows north-eastwards. Until Payerne, the Broye snakes its way across the broad plain that was once gouged out by the Rhone Glacier; the surrounding slopes are rocky in places.
The bike tour reaches its lowest point in Lucens, in the valley. You'll immediately see the eye-catching castle, enthroned on a rocky spur above the village. It has changed hands many times. The most famous owner: Adrian Conan Doyle, son of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the writer. Adrian set up a Sherlock Holmes Museum here, but it has now moved to the Maison Rouge in the village. Lucens Castle can be hired for events nowadays. The old village centre also features several handsome and well-preserved townhouses and farmhouses dating from the 17th to the 19th centuries. The return route takes you uphill one last time to Chesalles-sur-Moudon, and then you ride back through the forest to the Broye and Moudon.
An enjoyable tour includes the careful planning of the same. Please inform yourself in advance at the local information center about the route and weather conditions. Depending on the season and weather conditions, this route may be blocked or interrupted
