Intro

On the Lag da Pigniu Bike, you can explore the secrets of historic castles and old mountain passes. The route combines flowing trails and sun-kissed mountain villages with almost non-stop panoramic views. The highlight is the picturesque Lag da Pigniu at the foot of the Panixer Pass. The trails are easy to ride and well-suited for beginners.

Description

The route begins in Breil/Brigels. The sun-kissed village lies on the southern slope of the Vorderrhein. As you ride through the old village centre, you will notice the tanned wooden houses huddled together. As you leave the village, a gravel road leads towards the Ruina Grotta. Only a small roadside signpost points to the castle complex. It's well worth a visit – the stunning ruins were built into the rock. The well-preserved structures cling to the sheer vertical rock face like an eagle's nest.

On the descent along the ridge, you pass the mountain village of Waltensburg/Vuorz, with its typical farmhouses decorated with flowers. Shortly afterwards, a short, flowing single trail leads to the castle ruins of Munt Sogn Gieri. It's the oldest and largest castle complex in the Surselva and covers an area of around 7,000 square metres. A barbecue area with firewood invites you to linger before savouring the last flowing bends to Rueun.

Next up, pedal power is required. A 700-metre climb leads up to Pigniu, the gateway to the Panixer Pass. General Suvorov and his troops already crossed this old mountain pass in the 18th century. A painting on the dam wall of Lag da Pigniu recalls the dramatic crossing. The wall's foundation consists of limestone rocks with petrified corals that formed as a reef in the tropical sea 140 million years ago and were uplifted by the Alpine thrust.

Sweeping views over the lake, nestled between the steeply sloping meadows and sheer vertical rock faces, beckon from the top. At the far end, you can spot a waterfall. Masses of water from the melting glacier fields plunge over a series of rock steps. The way back combines easy single trails and alpine roads. It leads past pretty alpine meadows to Andiast. You return to Breil/Brigels via the Migliè plain and can once again enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding peaks at Lag da Breil.

An enjoyable tour includes the careful planning of the same. Please inform yourself in advance at the local information center about the route and weather conditions. Depending on the season and weather conditions, this route may be blocked or interrupted
