Nordwand Trail
Overview
Intro
A snowshoe trail that runs from Schwarzsee to below the steep northern face of the Matterhorn, passing through the splendid village of Stafelalp. A stunning sight!
Description
The path leads from Schwarzsee to the foot of the north face of the Matterhorn across the beautiful landscape of Stafelalp. The dark, imposing mountain face dominates the landscape. The feeling of crossing the Matterhorn in the snow is an experience like no other. It’s difficult to believe that mountaineers climb the north face of the Matterhorn during the winter, as did Walter Bonatti, on his own in 1965. The chill of the north face is palpable.
Make sure you choose the right time of day to hike, in order to enjoy the rays of the sun, which disappear early in the winter. To warm up and keep your energy levels high, there are a few points to stop and eat along the way. Get your show shoes ready! And above all, don’t forget your camera because a photo of the steep north face of the Matterhorn is certainly worth the trouble.
An enjoyable tour includes the careful planning of the same. Please inform yourself in advance at the local information center about the route and weather conditions. Depending on the season and weather conditions, this route may be blocked or interrupted
