Trail Run Pizol
Overview
Intro
Pizol’s five famous lakes are sparkling spots to take a break along this run through the Glarus Alps. A series of steep ups and downs takes you past each of them in their Alpine surroundings.
Description
From the Pizolbahn station, ride the gondola then two chair lifts from Wangs to the Pizol Hut to start this high-altitude run. The station overlooks Wangersee, the first of the five lakes. After a series of switchbacks, you reach a narrow passage, Wildseeluggen, beside the turquoise water of the second lake, Wildsee. From the pass, you have an impressive view of the Pizol summit (2,226 metres). The rocky trail continues to rise and fall to the shore of each lake, Wangersee, Wildsee, Schottensee, Schwarzsee and, finally, Baschalvasee.
Descending past the last of the lakes on the tour, the run is only halfway through. A long traverse then leads to the Garmil viewpoint. In the final kilometres, a beautiful and quiet forest trail leads down to Furt, where you can ride the gondola back down to Wangs.
Tip from ALPSinsight: If you’ve spent too long admiring the lakes, the Gaffia chair lift is a faster way to return to Wangs. This is the final destination of the classic five lakes tour, but continuing along the route to Furt, you’ll have an entirely different experience of the Pizol region.
