Insula dulcamara
Measured by area, "Insula dulcamara" is Paul Klee's largest work (88 x 176 cm). Delicate colour shades that evoke plants in bloom contrast with harsh black lines. As the medium for this picture, Klee used newsprint stretched on jute which he painted with oils and coloured paste. The title conjures up exotic associations, but it also alludes to the contrast between sweet (dulcis) and bitter (amarus). Klee is probably referring to herbal medicine: Solanum dulcamara.
